HUMAN PROMOTION The Parish is committed to the social promotion of adults through different courses and activities. Some of them are materialized through these two projects: Bakhita Centre The Bakhita Project was initiated by the Canossian Sisters at the Sacred Heart Church in March 2001. It is an educational and vocational training center that serves African youth from the refugee and displaced community in Cairo, by providing educational opportunities in order to build self-sufficiently and self respect in preparation for repatriation or resettlement. It offers classes in Computer Studies, English Language, French Language, Accounts and Basic Literacy to around 400 students per term. It employs 8 African refugee teachers. The Bakhita Women's Group is an active association of Sudanese women of the Sacred Heart Church parish who implement basic Literacy classes in Arabic and English, sewing and computer courses and income generation activities for around 100 women (mainly widows and female heads of households) each term. Nine members of the Sudanese refugee community also benefit from the project as compensated teachers and child minders.
